Oct 19, 2010 - Mock Election
Conkwright MS Y-club held a mock election. 31 students, 4 parents, and 2 teachers made this event possible and Bob Flynn and Rachel Parsons from the Winchester Sun reported on the event:
“At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Ramsey Hatchett was still trying to decide who to cast her vote for, although she was leaning toward the Republican candidates.
“That’s my patents,” Ramsey said.
As an eighth grade student at Conkwright Middle School, Ramsey is not quite old enough to cast a ballot in the Nov. 2 election, but thanks to a mini-grant from Community Education, she and more than 500 other Conkwright students were able to vote in a mock election.
In addition to voting, Ramsey was a polling worker and is secretary of the Student Y Organization, which organized the mock election.
Although Ramsey said she didn’t talk to her parents about the candidates, she has ‘seen a lot on TV.”
Students had the opportunity to vote for state representative, U.S. Senate, and U.S. Representative [sic].
Griffith said that the election actually originated with her mother, Beth Griffith.
‘My mom thought maybe we should do this as community service,” Laura said.
Community service projects are required by the Student Y Organization, and the club is also planning to host a Veterans’ Day event.
Student Y sponsor Jackie Woolum, a French teacher for Conkwrigh magnet students, said that the project was aimed at the parents as much as the students.
“We’re hopefully promoting the idea that they’ll take home that everybody should vote. …this before the real election so they could go home and say, “I got to vote today.”
Seventh grade student Robert Dean said his decision would be based on whether or not he ‘likes the (candidates’) ideas.”
He declined to make a prediction, though he had talked to his classmates about who they planned to vote for.
“Most of them are still thinking about it,” he added.
Shelbi Broeking, an eighth grade student, said that she was leaning toward voting Republican because ‘that’s what my values are.”

Conkwright MS worked with the Conkwright Custodial services to Paint a portion of the school over summer break. 21 students and 6 parents worked for a week on the project.
Student Y Reporter Shelbi Broeking wrote:
“The drab, white halls of Conkwright Middle needed to some brightening up! The students in Conkwright’s Student Y and our new principal, Mr. Earlywine, decided that re-painting some of the school could inspire the upcoming school year to be bright and fun, a great learning environment! Student Y, with the help of a few parent volunteers, painted the top half of the walls on the first floor red. Using roller brushes and a few hand brushes Student Y spent a whole week painting, touching up, and putting multiple coats to make the walls look great! They spent ALL day at the school, which says a lot considering that it was their summer vacation. They took time out of their break from school, AT the school, when they could have been swimming or hanging out with their friends. They were rewarded though! On the first day of school many unsuspecting students sported many shocked looks when seeing the new, bright red walls for the first time. They all seemed to like it, so that made it worthwhile! Every nook and cranny halfway up the wall is filled with coats of beautiful red paint, and might I say it looks fantastic!
June 2010 - Clothing Drive
35 members and 5 parents from the Conkwright MS collaborated with the Family Youth Services Resource Center for a Dress Code Clothing Drive.
Student Y Reporter Shelbi Broeking wrote:
“On the last 2 days of school the students at Conkwright Middle School were granted dress-down days on one condition…They had to bring in their old dress code clothes! Everyone that participated in this event brought one or more pieces of clothing to send down to the FRC (Family Resource Center). The students who manned this event where none other than Conkwright’s Student Y Organization! They bravely tackled the monstrous piles of clothes (trust me it was to the ceiling both days!) and the check-in table. As the students came through the door they signed in at a table checking off their dress down day. They handed their clothes to the parents and students who put them in bags and sent them down to the FRC. As the bags were emptied the pile grew and the students got to work. They folded and sorted every single item and bagged them according to size and gender. This was a very difficult task and at the end the students enjoyed some pizza! This service project provided the FRC with clothes that they can use for many, many years!”

Help for Haiti Wristbands became a leading project for Y Clubs in Kentucky and stretched across the country. Schools were invited to sell the wristbands to raise money for the YMCA World Service Fund, the organization through which donations are channeled at the Kentucky United Nations Assembly. Outside of Kentucky Y Clubs, a new YMCA branch ordered 250 wristbands for their grand opening in Arizona. In total, nearly $7,000 was raised for the YMCA World Service Fund. In recognition, Trinity's Y Club was awarded the YMCA World Service Fund Award. Gracious thanks goes to all those schools who participated and to any individual who bought, sold, or worked on behalf of this project.
